To provide a practical, reliable, and efficient system and method by improving an automated system (10) for automatically designing and manufacturing an orthodontic appliance (25).
The mouth of a patient (12) is scanned to produce a three-dimensional digitized model (26) of shapes of patient's teeth and their positions in the patient's mouth, from a model (20) of the mouth. A computer (30) calculates post-treatment positions and orientations of the teeth to produce three-dimensional images of the teeth. An orthodontist (14) corrects the post-treatment positions and orientations calculated by the computer, through an interactive computer link between a doctor's office (11) and an appliance designing and manufacturing facility (13). The computer, for the approval of orthodontist, automatically designs an orthodontic appliance, and recalculates the post-treatment positions and orientations of the teeth with high precision. Brackets (81) of the orthodontic appliance and jigs (87) for automatically and exactly positioning the brackets on the patient's teeth are designed and manufactured.
