Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent perfectly occurrence of rust at fitting part to a machine and cutting edge without need for any anti-rust care, by covering said fitting part and cutting edge with a thin layer of uniform titanium carbide/nitride/oxide film having outstandingly excellent anti-rust property.

CONSTITUTION: These coating films of a titanium carbide/nitride/oxide complex adapted to cover at least cutting edge and fitting part of a cutting tool made of high speed steel have a yellowish orange color, a composition formula: TiCxNyOz (wherein, 0.05<x<0.3, z<0.3, x+y+z<1.0) and a thickness: 0.01W0.5μm. They are formed by puttig the cutting tool in an electric discharging space, and using the plasma chemical evaporation method in which TiCl4, H2, and N2 are introduced into said space or the spattering method in which Ti or titanium nitride (TiN) is used as target and electric discharges are generated in the atmosphere of N2+Ar or N2+Ar+H2 under pressure: 10-2W10-1mmHg.
