Abstract:
PURPOSE: To allow a cutting tool to exhibit excellent cutting capacity over a long period by forming the structure of a titanium carbon nitride layer of the one with vertically long growing crystals and the structure of an aluminum oxide layer of the one essentially consisting of kappa-type crystals.
CONSTITUTION: The substrate of tungsten carbide-base cemented carbide is formed into a wholly homogeneous one or the one in which the surface layer part is provided with a bonding phase-enriched zone area. The surface of the substrate is provided with a primary layer of titanium nitride with a granular crystal structure and a secondary layer of titanium carbon nitride. It is furthermore provided with a third layer of aluminum oxide with an alpha-type crystal structure. The hard coating layers constituted of each layer are formed at 3 to 30μm prescribed average layer thickness to constitute a cutting tool made of surface coated tungsten carbide-base cemented carbide. Then, the structure of the titanium carbon nitride layer as the secondary layer is formed into a vertically long growing crystal structure, and the aluminum oxide layer as the third layer is formed into a structure essentially consisting of kappa- type crystals. Thus, the generation of interlayer peeling and chipping on the hard coating layers is eliminated.
