PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new derivative, isolated from a cultured mycelium of Hericium erinaceum Pers. which is a mushroom belonging to the genus Hericium of the family Hydnaceae, having the cyathane skeleton, capable of manifesting inducing actions on the nerve growth factor production and useful as a therapeutic agent, etc., for senile dementia.
CONSTITUTION: This new cyathane derivative represented by the formula is obtained by culturing a mycelium of Hericium erinaceum Pers. belonging to the genus Hericium of the family Hydnaceae in a culture medium for 4 weeks, centrifuging the resultant cultured product, providing a cultured mycelium which is a precipitate, then adding the cultured mycelium to an 85% aqueous solution of ethanol, carrying out the homogenizing treatment, allowing the resultant homogenate to stand at ambient temperature for 1 week, filtering the homogenate, collecting an extract solution, heating the obtained extract solution under a vacuum, evaporating the ethanol, recovering an aqueous layer, extracting the recovered aqueous layer with ethyl acetate, treating the extract by silica gel column chromatography and purifying the extract. The resultant derivative has inducing actions on the nerve growth factor production and is useful as a therapeutic agent, etc., for senile dementia.
