PURPOSE: To obtain the compounds useful as liq. viscosity imparting agents by contacting specific hydrocarbons or polymers with specific carbonyl compounds.

CONSTITUTION: By contacting, (A) in the presence of a free radical initiator such as dialkylperoxide, (B) (substituted) saturated hydrocarbons such as 1-500C paraffin or a polymer such as PE with (C) a carbonyl compound of formula I [wherein Q is water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or n-butyl alcohol; (n) is 0 or a positive integer; X and Y are each CH2 or C=O; U, V and W are each CH2, C=O, O, NH, C(CH3)2, =N-1-18C alkyl or N-1-12C alkyl; -U-V- is a 1,2-phenylene, a 1,8-naphthalen-diyl or a 1,2-naphthalen-diyl], the aimed compd is obtained, preferably the compound has a hydrocarbon group and a group of formula II.
