PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cyclic olefin compound that can provide a photoreactive polymer having not only excellence in the liquid crystal alignment and the alignment rate but also readiness for change in the alignment direction depending on the polarization direction.SOLUTION: The cyclic olefin compound is represented by the chemical formula 1, where q is an integer between 0 and 4; and R1 to R4 are groups having a phenyl or naphthalene ring at an end.
