Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new cyclohexanecarbaldehyde compound useful as an intermediate for producing silacyclohexane-type liquid crystal compounds.

CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [Ar is phenyl or tolyl; R is a 1-10C straight chain (mono) or difluoro)alkyl, 3-8C branched chain alkyl or 2-7C alkoxyalkyl], e.g. 4-(4-phenyl-4-n-propyl-4-silacyclohexyl) cyclohexanecarbaldehyde. The compound of formula I is obtained by the following process: a ylide compound of formula II (R; is a 1-10C alkyl) formed from an alkoxymethyl triphenylphosphonium salt by the action of a base is reacted with a compound of formula III to produce a compound of formula IV, which is, in turn, hydrolyzed with an acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid.
