To obtain a new cyclopentyl derivative represented by a specific formula, having as low conductivity as possible and as high dielectric anisotropy as possible and useful as an electrooptical display apparatus.
This compound is represented by the formula [ring A and ring B are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene; Z1 and Z2 are each a single bond, (CH2)2, CH2O, etc.; X1 and X2 are each H or F; Y is F, Cl, cyano, etc.; (m) is 0-7; (n) and (P) are each 0 or 1], e.g. 4-cyclopentylidene- trans-4'-(3,4-difluorophenyl)bicyclohexyl. Furthermore, the compound is obtained by adding a base such as potassium tert-butylate to Wittig salt formed between triphenylphosphine and a halo or halomethyl-cyclopentane in an inert solvent, passing through Wittig reaction with a 4-substituted cyclohexanone and carrying out catalytic hydrogenation with platinum/charcoal.
