Abstract:

To positively stratify a mixture even when fuel pressure differs.

An internal combustion engine 1 provided with a fuel injection apparatus 6 for injecting fuel toward the inside of a cylinder, almost at the upper part center of a combustion chamber 4, has an operation mode of performing stratified combustion as fuel injected in a compression stroke forms a stratified mixture while moving along a cavity 5a provided almost at the center part of a piston crown face. The internal combustion engine 1 is provided with an arrival position predicting means 15 for predicting the arrival position of fuel spray on a piston; a fuel injection pressure detecting means 14 for detecting fuel injection pressure, and a fuel injection timing changing means 15 for changing the fuel injection timing according to a fuel injection pressure detection value so that the moving direction of the fuel injected from the fuel injection device 6, along the cavity 5a does not change.
