PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure cooling ability at the time of premixed combustion while preventing over-cooling of an engine main body at the time of stratified charge combustion.
SOLUTION: Fuel injection through a fuel injection valve is carried out in a compression stroke at the time of low load to conduct stratified charge combustion by forming an air-fuel mixture in the vicinity of an ignition plug electrode, and fuel injection is carried out in an intake stroke at the time of high load to conduct premixed combustion by distributing homogeneously an air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber. A cooling water circulating flow returning from a cooling water pump 42 to cooling water passages 30, 32, 34 of an internal combustion engine main body via a radiator 40 is formed at the time of the premixed combustion. A cooling water quantity to a water passage 30 inside a cylinder block opposite to a fuel injection valve is restrained by restricting a water quantity control valve 45 at the time of stratified charge combustion to accelerate atomization of the fuel deposited in a wall surface of the combustion chamber. The cooling water bypasses the radiator 40 at the Lime of stratified charge combustion to be circulated among the cooling water pump 40 and the cooling water passage 30, 32, 34 inside the internal combustion engine main body.
