To provide a cylinder direct injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine capable of controlling the fuel spray advancing direction by the difference in the atmospheric density in a cylinder corresponding to the operating condition of the internal combustion engine.
A shroud part 19 is provided between an ignition plug 4 and a fuel injection valve 6, the ignition plug 4 side of the fuel injection valve 6 is covered by the shroud part 19, and the fuel injection valve 6 is disposed in a recessed part 11. The fuel spray advancing direction can be changed by utilizing the difference in the air density in the cylinder between the injection in the suction stroke and the injection in the compression stroke, excellent stratified fuel/air mixture can be formed, HC attributable to fuel deposited on a wall surface can be reduced, and both high thermal efficiency and high output can be realized.
