To provide a cylinder injection type internal combustion engine which can improve the utilization ratio of air within a cylinder and accomplish stable combustion without knocking.
The cylinder injection type internal combustion engine including an ignition plug 9 and a fuel injection valve 8 within a combustion chamber 21, performs divided fuel injection twice in one cycle by the fuel injection valve 8. In the cylinder direct injection type internal combustion engine, the injecting direction of at least a part of fuel at the second or main injection is made different from the injecting direction of fuel at the first or pilot injection. Gaseous mixture formed by the pilot injection is ignited so as to generate pilot flame by which fuel spray formed by the main injection is burned. Thus, it is possible to prevent occurrence of knocking and accomplish stable combustion by improving the utilization ratio of air within the cylinder.
