To realize excellent resistance against wear and burning by forming a hard ceramics covered layer whose surface roughness is a specific value or less in a piston ring and on an inner peripheral face which forms a slide face which slides by a gas phase method.
A ceramic covered layer consists of a layer covered with at least one kind of metal selected from among Cr2N and CrN which provide extremely high adhesion property with a steel cylinder liner or CrN in which oxygen is dissolved or TiN, preferably, a layer covered with CrN or TiN. Excellent slide property of the cylinder liner and a piston ring is provided and the resistance against burning is by far improved by a gas phase method, preferably, PVD and CVD method. Moreover, since the hardness of this hard ceramic covered layer is very high and 1,000 to 3,000 according to the Vickers hardness standard (Hv), it has excellent self-wear. Furthermore, since surface roughness of a cylinder liner slide face is 1.5μRz, the wear of a mating member is also reduced (it becomes possible to prolong the service life of mutual members).
