A cylinder 1 for a reciprocating piston engine includes a slit-like cut hole 5 for receiving and distributing lubricant. The slit-like cut hole 5 is arranged on the slide face 7 of the cylinder, and includes a first portion 18 and a second portion 19. The first portion 18 includes a first end 20 and a second end 21, the first end 20 has a first opening 30, and the second end 21 has a second opening 31. The second portion 19 includes the second end 21 and a third end 22, and the third end 22 has a third opening 32. When a piston ring is positioned between one of the first opening 30 or the third opening 32 and the second opening 31, the first opening 30 and the third opening 32 are arranged below the piston ring, and the second opening 31 is arranged above the piston ring.
