PURPOSE: To secure the higher degree of information compression by partitioning the screen every lines and also in the direction of row to form the block coinciding with the specified pattern and forming the compression code with the pattern code of the block and the length code of the white/black area.
CONSTITUTION: White/black changing point detecting circuit 11 detects the white/ black change for each of i, i + 1 and i + 2 lines, supplies the pulse showing the white/black or black/white change, if any in either line, to changing point length counter 15, and supplies the white/black information of each line to block start point detecting circuit 12 as well as to block terminal point detecting circuit 13. Both circuits 12 and 13 collect the information through windows, and circuit 12 makes counter 15 start counting when the coincidence is obtained between the pattern shown by the collected information and the prescribed pattern. Then circuit 13 stops the counting of counter 15 when the information ends. The compression code is formed with the pattern code of the block and the length code of the white/ black area. In this way, the higher degree of information compression can be secured.
