PURPOSE: To provide the data display form generating device which enables a user to easily and quickly designate a display area of character data without taking the maximum number of characters into consideration and reduce an erroneous of designation when a user designates a display area of character data.
CONSTITUTION: When the user will designate the display area of input/output data, he indicates the start point of the display area by a mouse cursor 11 and clicks a mouse, and then, the start point of the display area is determined. When the mouse is used to move the mouse cursor 11, an interval between the state point and the present position of the mouse cursor 11 is calculated to calculate the number of characters which can be displayed in the interval. He clicks the mouse again in a proper position to settle the end point of the display area, thus determining the data display area.
