To accurately and quickly re-input the data of unread forms such as bar codes in a device for automatically reading the bar codes of a large number of forms.
A large number of forms are successively carried, the characters and/or symbols of the specific part of each form are read, the whole image of each form is recorded, and data are prepared for each form under the control of a computer. The forms whose characters and/or symbols have not been read are detected with an unread form detecting means (36) programmed in a computer (6). The image data of the unread forms are displayed on a screen (32a) of a display device (32) of the computer (6) with an unread form image display means (38) programmed in the computer (6). When the images of the unread forms displayed on the screen (32a) are directly scanned with a portable optical reader (40), a data recognizing means (42) programmed in the computer (6) fetches the data read with the portable optical reader (40), and inputs the fetched data to the prescribed area of the data of the unread forms.
