A data processing apparatus has: a receiving part that receives signals included with video information on programs and guide information to be used for program guides, which is different from viewing restriction information specified by standards; a judgement part which judges whether patterns for prespecified viewing restrictions are included in the guide information; a management information generation part which determines whether to restrict viewing for programs based on judgement results and generates management information that links programs to the existence of viewing restrictions; and an output control part which controls output of information on programs. The guide information is different from the viewing restriction information specified by standards, so that the guide information makes viewing restrictions even for programs where broadcasting stations do not add viewing restriction information.
