To provide a data processing apparatus and data processing method for reducing power consumption while performing suitable response processing corresponding to the reception situation of a packet received via a network.

When a received packet is a proxy answering pattern, a packet processing means transmits response data corresponding to the proxy answering pattern to the transmission source of the received packet and when the reception situation of a received packet discriminated as a proxy answering candidate pattern becomes a specific reception situation, discrimination information stored in a storage means is updated so as to discriminate the packet which has been discriminated as the proxy answering candidate pattern as a proxy answering pattern.
