To provide a new decahydronaphthalene derivative containing a cyclohexylene ring and giving a liquid crystal composition having broad nematic phase temperature range and small refractive index anisotropy and enabling low-voltage driving and high-speed response.
The objective compound is expressed by formula I (R is a 1-18C alkyl; L is CH2CH2, CH2O, single bond or the like; Xa to Xc are each H or F; Z is H, a halogen, cyano or the like; the decahydronaphthalene ring has trans-form and its 2,6-site has trans-configuration), e.g. trans-6-(trans-4- propylcyclohexyl)-2-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)-trans-decahydronaphthalene. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting a 6-substituted decahydronaphthalen-2-one of formula II with an organometallic reactant of formula III (Z' is H, protected cyano or the like; W is MgCl, Li or the like), dehydrating the product in the presence of an acid catalyst, hydrogenating the produced phenyldecahydronaphthalene derivative and converting into a prescribed functional group.
