Abstract:

To solve the problems of pseudo synchronization and synchronization pullout caused by erroneous detection of a synchronization code in an image signal decoder.

The decoder has: an input decoder 800 for detecting a synchronization code having a different length corresponding to each of a plurality of layers, and outputting a synchronization code detecting signal 803 at a plurality of periodically predetermined synchronization code inserting positions in an input code string 205' including a multiplexed code string, in which a plurality kinds of variable length codes generated by compressing and coding an image signal are multiplexed for each of the plurality of layers; an inverse multiplexer 811 for inversely multiplexing a multiplexed code string 801 in the input code string by using the position indicated by the signal 803 as a reference to generate variable length codes 841, 842; and variable length decoders 806, 810 for decoding the codes 841, 842 and outputting a reproduction image signal.
