PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for preparing ε caprolactam suitable as a raw material substance for nylons by a method high in reaction rate.
SOLUTION: A cycloalkanol/a cycloalkanone is obtained by decomposing a cycloalkyl hydroperoxide in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide dissolved in an aqueous phase and ≥10wt.% based on the aqueous phase (preferably 20-30wt.% as salt concentration) of one or more alkali metal salts (Na or K salt of a mono- or metal during the decomposition reaction). The concentration of the salt to promote the decomposition is preferably 0.1-1,000ppm. A mixture containing the cycloalkyl hydroperoxide to be used for the reaction is obtained by oxidizing a cycloalkane corresponding to the cycloalkyl hydroperoxide preferably at 140-190°C under 0.4-2.5MPa in the absence of an oxidation catalyst.
