PURPOSE: To exhibit a desired appearance even when subjected to thermal stress by providing in turn a transparent stabilizing layer comprising a radiation- cured material disposed on the rear side of the self-supporting transparent structural layer and a metal layer having desired appearance.
CONSTITUTION: To fabricate a composite material, a fabricating carrier 30 having a fabricating surface that exhibits a desired finish is prepared, and a metal layer 16 is removably formed on the fabricating surface of the carrier 30. The surface appearance of the metal layer 16 is defined by the finish of the fabricating surface, and the metal layer contains at least one metal of aluminum, nickel, chrome, gold, silver, or tin. A stabilizing layer 14 is further formed on the surface of the metal layer 16. The stabilizing layer 14 has a glass modulus of about 3.0×109 Pascals or more at 0°C and comprising a radiation-cured, thermoset material. A transparent extensible self-supporting structural layer 12 is formed on the stabilizing layer 14. The metal layer 16 and the structural layer 12 are provided to occupy the same region. The fabricating carrier 30 is removed from the metal layer 16 and the rear side of the metal layer 16 is exposed so as to complete the fabrication.
