To provide a defluorination method of a fluorine-containing compound, capable of breaking a carbon-fluorine bond in a fluorine-containing compound at high reaction efficiency even in mild conditions and capable of easily separating a catalyst from a product after the reaction for reuse.
A method for eliminating fluorine from a fluorine-containing compound includes the step of bringing the fluorine-containing compound into contact with a platinum group metal catalyst in a wet manner to break a carbon-fluorine bond in the fluorine-containing compound. The platinum group metal catalyst preferably includes: a carbon particle; and at least one platinum group metal which is supported by the carbon particle and is selected from the group consisting of platinum, ruthenium and iridium. A specific surface area of the carbon particle is preferably 800-2,000 m2/g.
