PURPOSE: To protect passengers from an accident previously by supporting a delta guard, which is arranged in a narrow part between a movable handrail of an escalator and a lower end of an adjacent structure, with the adjacent structure through an elastic supporting means.

CONSTITUTION: A delta guard 4 is arranged in a narrow part 3 between a movable handrail 1 of an escalator and a lower end 2 of an adjacent structure such as a truss facing of a different escalator adjacent to this escalator or the floor of the upstairs. Displacement of the movement of the delta guard 4 when a passenger contacts with the delta guard 4 is detected by a movement detecting means to stop the escalator. In this safety device, the delta guard 4 is supported by an adjacent structure through spring type dumpers 12, 12 as elastic supporting means. When a passenger or the like contacts with the delta guard 4 and the delta guard 4 is moved by a certain distance or more, a limit switch 14 is operated, and the operation of the escalator is stopped.
