Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide the title method of increased effectiveness by adding water to a crude oil emulsion to increase the water-to-oil ratio and by further adding an surfactant to the system to make it unstable.
CONSTITUTION: To a natural emulsion comprising a crude oil and a saline solution, stabilized by finely-powdered rock or naturally-occurring solid particles, is added A) water in such an amount that the total amount of water becomes pref. 50W 80vol% followed by adding B) pref. 500W1,000ppm, based on the amount of the system, of an anionic surfactant such as an alkyl benzene-sulfonate. The resulting mixture is then left to stand to effect spontaneous separation of the crude oil component.
