Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymn. initiator for a dental or surgical adhesive with no risk of fire by adding a specific aprotic solvent (e.g. acetone) to an organoboron compd.
SOLUTION: This initiator is obtd. by compounding 100 pts.wt. organoboron compd. with 10-150 pts.wt. aprotic solvent having a b.p. of 30-150°C. Pref. examples of the compd. are optionally oxidized trialkylborons, oxidized ones being esp. pref. Pref. solvents are hydrocarbons, esters, and ketones, esp. pref. examples being acetone, MEK, and ethyl acetate. The initiator does not cause scorching nor fire even when in contact with paper and has high flowability and polymn. activity. The safety of the initiator is further improved by the further addition of an inert org. oligomer or polymer. An adhesive is prepd. by compounding 30-90 pts.wt. polymerizable monomer [e.g. a (meth)acrylate], 0-60 pts.wt. (meth)acrylate polymer, and 1-30 pts.wt. this initiator.
