A depth signal generation device 1 comprises: a luminance histogram data generation unit 121 that divides a luminance level of a video signal into plural luminance level areas, and generates luminance histogram data based on the number of pixels included in each luminance level area for every pixels of a predetermined unit of the video signal; a high-frequency component histogram data generation unit 122 that generates high-frequency component histogram data indicating the distribution of high-frequency components of luminance levels; and a depth signal estimation unit 13 that corrects the luminance histogram data based on the high-frequency component histogram data, calculates a gain correction value based on a state of the distribution of the corrected luminance histogram data, generates a tone correction curve based on the calculated gain correction value and the corrected luminance histogram data, and generates a depth signal from the video signal based on the generated tone correction curve.
