PURPOSE: To provide the novel bis(phenoxymethyl)cyclohexane derivative capable of being added to a liquid crystal material to minimize the increase in the viscosity of the liquid crystal material and enabling to reduce the anisotropy of the refractive index.

CONSTITUTION: The bis(phenoxymethyl)cyclohexane derivative of formula I [X is alkylene; Y is-O-R, -COO-R (R is alkyl)], e.g. trans-1-(4'- ethylphenoxymethyl)-4-(4'-methoxycarbonylphenoxymethyl) cyclohexane of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained e.g. by etherifying one of the hydroxyl groups of trans-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol with a p-alkylphenol and furthermore etherifying the remaining hydroxyl group with another nucleus- substituted phenol.
