PURPOSE: To prolong the life of a magnetic head against its wear by lowering pressure in a rotary drum device and sucking a magnetic tape to the rotary drum device at the time of a recording reproducing operation.
CONSTITUTION: A pressure control means 12 consisting of an air pump 27, an air tank 26 and a control valve 25 is connected via a pipe 28 to the rotary drum device 2. The control valve 25 is controlled to lower the pressure in the rotary drum device by a controller 13 in accordance with an operation mode of the magnetic recording and reproducing device, such as a recording/ reproducing or search mode, etc., only at the time required for read and write on the magnetic tape by the magnetic head. A through-part for communication between time inside and the outside of the drum is provided in the vicinity of the magnetic head of the rotary drum device 2, and when the pressure in the drum is lowered, air is taken from the outside to flow in, and hence the magnetic tape is sucked to be in contact with the magnetic head. The tip of the magnetic head is set without protruding from the outer circumferential part of the rotary drum device.
