Abstract:

PURPOSE: To surely perform the desulfurization and deashing of coal in high efficiency using a small amount of microorganism without using a flotation reagent by contacting a mixture of powdered coal and water with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans known as an iron-oxidizing bacterial strain.
CONSTITUTION: A coal flotation apparatus 1 to be used in the present process has a cylindrical glass column 2 having a glass filter 3 attached to the bottom. The column 2 is filled with a flotation liquid 4 containing suspended cells of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 strain and the liquid is incorporated with a foaming agent such as methylisobutyl carbinol and stirred. High-sulfur coal is charged into the column from above and stirred for a prescribed period to contact the coal with the microorganism, air is supplied with an air pump 5 at a flow rate controlled with a flow meter 6 to 1.0ml/min and washing water 8 is supplied from the water-supplying part 7 to the column to perform the coal flotation. A mixture of powdered coal and water discharged from the top of the column 2 is separated into froth 9 and tail 11 and the tail 11 is recovered and dried to effect the sure desulfurization and deashing of coal in high efficiency without using a flotation reagent.
