Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a process for separating sulfur compounds included in aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene advantageously from economical point of view.
CONSTITUTION: Aromatic hydrocarbons or aromatic hydrocarbon fraction including sulfur compounds as impurities are crystallized out from the mother liquor. Then, a cationically polymerizable olefin is added to effect polymerization reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst and the reaction mixture is distilled to remove the polymerization products containing sulfur components whereby the hydrocarbons are purified. When the polymerization products are separated, the feedstock is continuously passed through the reactor filled with solid acid catalyst to effect the reactions, and simultaneously, the cationically polymerizable olefin is added in 2 or more portions to effect the reactions. The present process can reduce the sulfur compounds which cannot substantially be separated from the hydrocarbons through usual processes down to the extremely low concentration, moreover desulfurization can be carried out stably and continuously for a long period of time.
