To provide a snowfall/fog detecting apparatus of a simple apparatus constitution which accurately distinguishes snowfall and fog, and also to provide a self-luminous road traffic sign system using the same.
The snowfall/fog detecting device 1 is provided with: a transmitting device 121 for transmitting signal waves into the atmosphere A; a receiving device 122 arranged in such a way as receiving the signals waves transmitted from the transmitting device 121 and transmitted through the atmosphere A, or as receiving the signal waves transmitted from the transmitting device 121 and reflected at objects to be detected F and S present in the atmosphere A; a thermometer 15 for measuring the temperature of the atmosphere A; and a determining device 14 for determining the presence or absence of the objects to be detected F and S on the basis of output of the receiving device 122 and determining whether the objects to be detected are snowfall S or fog F on the basis of output of the thermometer 15 in the case that the presence of the objects to be detected F and S is determined.
