PURPOSE: To precisely detect the edge parts of a cast width, make a trimming quantity the suitable value and improve the producing yield by detecting marking position on a conveying table after executing the marking on a specific position preset in the cast width direction.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of directly and continuously casting a metal strip 4 through cooling molds 1, 1 periodically shifted or rotated, the marking 7 is applied on the specific position in the width direction of the metal strip 4 during casting or after casting. Thereafter, this marking is read an the cast edge parts in the width direction of the metal strip 4 are detected. At the time of using (w) for the cast width, the specific position in the width direction applying the marking is made to be the position being apart from the cast edge parts in the width direction of the cast metal strip 4 toward the center part by the distance satisfying 0.001×w-0.1×w. By this method, the edge parts in the cast width are precisely detected, and excess meandering during conveying is restrained and also, by making the trimming quantity the suitable value, the producing yield is improved.
