PURPOSE: To obtain a detergent composition which is excellent in lathering property, detergency, and feeling in its use and stably has a desired viscosity by incorporating a fatty acid soap, a sugar alcohol, and a specific glycerol derivative.

CONSTITUTION: The detergent composition comprises a fatty acid soap (e.g. potassium salt of coconut-oil fatty acid), a sugar alcohol (e.g. sorbitol), and a glycerol derivative represented by the formula [wherein one of Z1 and Z2 is R2-Y- and the other is OH; R1 and R2 each is a hydrocarbon group, provided that the sum of the carbon atoms of both is 13-400; and X and Y each is O or -C(=O)-O-].
