Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a diagnostic apparatus for the deteriorated condition of an exhaust purifying catalyst to precisely determine if the purifying ability of the catalyst has decreased. SOLUTION: The diagnostic apparatus includes the exhaust purifying catalyst 6 provided in the exhaust passage 3 of an internal combustion engine; an air-fuel ratio control means 201 for causing an exhaust air-fuel ratio upstream of the catalyst 6 to vary periodically about a reference value in the vicinity of a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio; an exhaust sensor 3a for detecting a quantity of state related to an exhaust air-fuel ratio downstream of the catalyst 6; and a diagnostic means 202 for calculating the rich side amplitude of an output from the exhaust sensor 3a with respect to a reference value and diagnosing the catalyst 6 for its deteriorated condition according to the rich side amplitude.
