To enable charging in a short time and the prolongation of a battery service life by gradually reducing the charge current to be charged into a battery arbitrarily and continuously, accompanied by the increase of the remaining capacity of the battery.
At the start of charge of a battery, this device applies a large charge current to a battery since the residual capacity of a battery detected with battery remaining capacity detection means 11 and 12 and the battery voltage are dropping. Then, this drops the charge current gradually, accompanying the rise of the battery voltage and the increase of the remaining capacity of the battery, by means of a charge current command means 16. Then, when the charge current reaches a preset value, this decreases it to a minute current once and starts the next charge by means of a data processing means 15. Then, when it reaches a designated point, the remaining capacity becomes roughly 100%, and this terminates the charge to the battery. As a result, the charge in a short time becomes possible without damaging the battery, and can prolong the service life of the battery.
