PURPOSE: To prevent the stickiness of segregated component and oxide in molten metal to the solidified shell at the initial stage and to improve the surface quality of a cast slab by providing a pair of shifting magnetic field generators and a flow straightening plate dipped into the molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: The shifting magnetic field generators 1-1, 1-2 (or 1-1', 1-2') are arranged near a pair opposite wall surfaces 9-1, 9-2 of a continuous casting mold. the flow straightening plate 10 made parallel with a pair of wall surfaces 9-1, 9-2 is arranged at a position equally distant from each of a pair of wall surfaces 9-1, 9-2 while dipping the lower end part thereof into the molten metal 3. The plate 10 is set leaving a space with each of wall surfaces adjacent to a pair of wall surfaces 9-1, 9-2. Since the flow straightening plate 10 is provided, the molten metal stream which is not parallel with each of the wall surfaces 9-1, 9-2 is intercepted and the stream is made entirely parallel with the wall surfaces 9-1, 9-2. Therefore, the molten metal stream is made to be smooth and violent horizontal revolving flow which flows along the growing surface of the solidified shell. The shifting magnetic field generator can be built in the mold or can be arranged at the upper part of the molten metal surface near the molten metal surface.
