PURPOSE: To provide a device for decomposition and digestion of organic substances wherein its stirring means for stirring a large amount of the organic substances to be treated can be driven by a small driving force.
CONSTITUTION: The structure of a decomposing and digesting tank 2 comprises the cascade plates 4 arranged in three tiers, upper, intermediate and lower, on the inner peripheral wall thereof, a horizontal transfer part 20 for horizontally transferring the organic substances which are loaded for treatment in the tank from a supply and discharge opening 21 and fall from above and a vertical transfer part 8 for receiving the organic substances from the horizontal transfer part and vertically transferring the same to the uppermost cascade plate 4. A cascade plate 4 in each tier is provided thereon with a plurality of stirring rods 9a connected to a cylindrical transfer part 8a of the vertical transfer part 8 and a chain is engaged with the motor-driven chain wheel and driven chain wheel provided outside the decomposing and digesting tank 2 and is passed around a chain engaging tooth 11 at the outer end of the stirring rod 9a in the lowermost tier.
