Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect breakage of an intake manifold precisely and rapidly in any of various operating condition.
SOLUTION: A differential pressure ΔPn between an averaged value Pave of pressure among all cylinders and a pressure Pn in each cylinder is calculated from cylinder pressure sensors (312), and is then compared with a threshold value A (316). If the differential pressure ΔPn exceeds the threshold value A, it is determined that an intake manifold connected to this cylinder is broken (S18). Further, the driver is warned as necessary (S20), and fail-safe process is carried out.
