PURPOSE: To provide a device for detecting a direction of the line of sight for a camera capable of obtaining an accurate direction of the line of sight by discriminating that a photographer looks through a finder with his left eye, or his right eye when he looks through the finder and correcting the detected direction of the line of sight based on the discrimination result.

CONSTITUTION: The device is provided with a discriminating means (sensor part 11) for discriminating that the photographer P looks through the finder F with his left eye EL, or his right eye ER when he looks through the finder F for guiding a luminous flux from an object O to the eye of the photographer P, a measuring means 12 for measuring the reflected light from his eye, and also, the device is provided with a line of sight information outputting means 13 provided with a correcting means 20 so as to correct the measurement result by the measuring means 12 based on the discrimination result by the sensor part 11 and for outputting information (i) on the direction of the line of sight by his eye.
