PURPOSE:To improve accuracy for detecting a driver's eye position. CONSTITUTION:A device for detecting a driver's eye position has an image input means CL1 for entering face image including eyes, a means CL2 for generating the first binary coded image via binary coding of input image sent from the means CL1, a means CL3 for extracting a connective component zone comprising black picture elements in the first binary coded image, a means CL4 for measuring the area of the connective component zone, and a means CL5 for generating the second binary coded image via the conversion of black picture elements to white picture elements for a zone where the area of the connective component zone is equal to or less than the predetermined value. Furthermore, the device has a means CL6 for identifying the right and left end points of a face via the extraction of the contour of face image from the second binary coded image, a means CL7 for setting a threshold value on the basis of density information on a zone inside the identified right and left end points, a means CL8 for generating the third binary coded image via binary coding of input image according to the threshold value, and a means CL9 for scanning an area within breadth between the identified right and left end points of the face from the lower side to the vertical upper side in the third binary coded image, and determining the vertical position of a zone where eyes are existing, according to the arrangement state of a black zone.
