To more precisely detect the failure of a cylinder pressure sensor without causing cost increase.
A device for determining the failure of the cylinder pressure sensor calculates cylinder pressure of an internal combustion engine based on the cylinder pressure sensor provided on the internal combustion engine, and calculates drift parameter indicating quantity of drift of the cylinder pressure based on the cylinder pressure. It is determined that the cylinder pressure sensor fails if the drift parameter is not in a predetermined range. In an embodiment, the predetermined range can be set based on behavior of cylinder pressure. In other embodiment, correction coefficient is determined according to an operation state of the internal combustion engine, and the drift parameter is corrected with the correction coefficient. In other embodiment, the cylinder pressure sensor is operated to superpose a predetermined investigation signal on output of the cylinder pressure sensor. Cylinder pressure is calculated based on output of the cylinder pressure sensor having the investigation signal superposed thereon.
