To provide a device for determining the variation of a tappet clearance, capable of monitoring the variation of the tappet clearance during engine operation and having high monitoring accuracy.
The device for determining the variation of the tappet clearance includes a cam rotatively driven by the crankshaft of an engine, a poppet valve composed to have transmission of motion of the cam via a tappet to open and close, and a determination means determining the variation of the tappet clearance formed between the tappet and an end of the valve rod. The determination means is disposed at a position where it is not moved with the opening and closing of the poppet valve and includes: an acceleration sensor detecting timing at which an acceleration of the poppet valve is generated when valve closing of the poppet valve; and a calculation means set with a standard value of timing at which the acceleration is generated when valve closing of the poppet valve and calculating the variation of the tappet clearance from a difference between the standard value and the value detected by the acceleration sensor.
