PURPOSE: To monitor the bulk density of a flow substance accurately by arranging a substance to be measured between a positron source and an extinction detector and providing a gumma ray detector for detecting gumma rays generated by absorbing positron within the extinction detector.
CONSTITUTION: A positron source 3 is provided in a container 15 and is arranged at one side of the container 15 and is protected so that it is not worn out. The positron source 3 consists of a positron emitting element with a known quality such as cobalt 56 or sodium 22 initially. A predictable number of positrons pass inside the container 15 due to the radioactive decay of the positron source 3. Then, the number of positrons absorbed by a deposit being formed in a fluid through the container 15 or the wall part of the container is determined by the bulk density of the substances. Also, by monitoring the number of positrons absorbed by a specific part of the container wall part called an extinction region 17, the bulk density of the substance in the container can be accurately predicted.
