To provide an inspection device which allows the deterioration state of the nosing part of a stair covering structure composed of a stair covering material attached to a stair backing material to be simply and reliably inspected and determined, and an inspection method using the same.

An inspection device comprises: an inspection device body 1 including a load receiving part 1a which receives an inspection load F, a pressing piece 1d which presses the surface of the covered nosing part 4b of a stair covering material 4 by the load F, and an arm part 1c extending from the pressing piece to the front side of the covered nosing part; and a displacement measuring device 2 which measures the displacement of the arm part when the surface of the covered nosing part of the stair covering material is pressed by the pressing piece. An inspection method comprises the steps of: placing the pressing piece 1d of the inspection device body 1 on the surface of the covered nosing part 4b of the stair covering material 4, loading the load receiving part 1a of the inspection device body 1 with the inspection load F so as to press the surface of the covered nosing part 4b with the pressing piece 1d, and measuring the displacement of the arm part 1c of the inspection device body with a displacement measuring device 2 on this occasion. The deterioration state of the nosing part of the stair covering structure is determined by the displacement size.
