To provide an inexpensive device for practical use for making waste harmless by irradiating the waste with radiation to decompose harmful chlorine- containing organic materials contained in the waste.
A cylindrical inner container 2 for housing the waste to be treated is installed almost in the center inside a steel-made outer container 1 consisting of a cylindrical container body 1A, a bottom 1B and a cover 1C. Plural cylindrical radiation source housing containers 3 capable of housing respective gamma ray sources are attachably/detachably disposed to surround the inner container. The radiation source to be used is selected from a spent control rod used in a nuclear reactor, a channel box and a high level radioactive waste glass-solidified body. The container 1 has a thickness enough to prevent harmful level radiation from emitting to the outside when the radiation source is housed. The containers 2 and 3 are made from a material and have the thickness which allow the transmission of a gamma rays.
