PURPOSE: To enable the measuring of erasion shape of the inner surface of a trough with sufficient precision and resolution power without any dead zone by lifting and shifting a sensor while measuring the distance between the reference point and the inner wall surface of the trough with a triangulation system laser beam range finder.
CONSTITUTION: The triangulation system laser beam range finder 1, 2 is incorporated into a protecting box 4 applied with cooling means and inserted into the bottom part of an iron tapping trough. The side surface of the trough is irradiated with the laser beam at the angle near the horizontal line and the dead zone which is impossible to measure in the side surface of the trough, is eliminated. The shift in the vertical direction of the range finder 1, 2 is executed by the driving of a rotary encorder, and the width of the inner surface of the trough is calculated by the measured value of the distance between the laser beam range finder 1, 2 and the inner surface of the trough, and the setting value of the irradiating angle of the laser beam to the inner surface of the trough. Further, the whole device containing the laser beam range finder 1, 2 is shifted in the longitudinal direction of the trough, the cross-sectional profile is measured all over the length of the trough.
