The device for automatically monitoring a passenger conveyor, which detects presence or absence of damage of a cleat (31) provided on a step (3) of the passenger conveyor and a comb (41) provided on a comb plate (4) in a getting on and off part, includes: a laser range scanner (1) for measuring two-dimensional distance data to the cleat and the comb by scanning with a laser beam (11) so that the region where the cleat passes between the comb teeth is monitored; and a control operation unit (2) for determining presence or absence of damage of the cleat and the comb by performing a comparative analysis between a shape image when monitoring created from the two-dimensional distance data and a reference shape image created in advance when the cleat and the comb have no damage.
