Abstract:
To superimpose easy-to-see subtitles on an image without damaging the image atmosphere relating to a device and method for displaying the image, and a projection type display device superimposing the subtitles.
The image display device calculates an average luminance APL per a unit time of the image by an image analyzing section 51, also extracts an image signal of a subtitle part from an image signal by a character extracting section 52, and carries out image processing so as to decrease the luminance of the subtitle part as the average brightness APL of the image decreases by a character gradation adjusting section 53.
